Plasma ACTH and melanocyte-stimulating hormone in nail pigmentation.

چکیده
occur with some anticancer agents such as cyclophosphamide (Shah et al., 1975), 5-FU and nitrogen mustard (Moore and Meiselbaugh, 1975), and also with exposure to x-rays (Sutton, 1952; Inalshingh, 1972). Priestman and James (1975) reported 3 cases in which nail changes were possibly due to doxorubicin. They speculated that this drug has a selective hormone-suppressive action which might allow an excess of melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) to be released from the pituitary. We report, however, a case of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with similar nail banding during combination chemotherapy with doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and prednisone (Gottlieb et al., 1973) without raised plasma ACTH and r-MSH levels. Hormone of Middle Lobe of Pituitary Melanocyte Stimulating Hormones
The hormones secreted by intermediate lobe or middle lobe of pituitary gland are called melanocyte stimulating hormones or MSH. POMC is the precursor molecule which is cleaved by proteases to give ACTH and β-lipotropin. The ACHT is further cleaved to β-MSH which has 13 amino acids. There is also α-MSH which is present in larger quantities. Amino acids 11-17 of β-MSH are common to both α-MSH and...
متن کاملPlasma profiles of adrenocorticotr opic hormone, cortisol, a-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, and growth hormone in dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism before and after hypophysectomy
The 6-h plasma profiles of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, a-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (a-MSH), and GH were studied in 17 dogs with pituitarydependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH) before and after hypophysectomy. The aim of the study was to investigate the relation between the hormone profile characteristics and recurrence of PDH after surgery. The hormones were secreted in a p...
متن کاملMitogenic and melanogenic stimulation of normal human melanocytes by melanotropic peptides.
The significance of melanotropic hormones as physiologic regulators of cutaneous pigmentation in humans is still controversial. Until recently, no direct effect for melanotropins could be demonstrated on human melanocytes. Here we present conclusive evidence that alpha-melanotropin (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, alpha-MSH) and the related hormone corticotropin (adrenocorticotropic hormo...
متن کاملThe Neuropeptide Alpha-Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone Is Critically Involved in the Development of Cytotoxic CD8+ T Cells in Mice and Humans
BACKGROUND The neuropeptide alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone is well known as a mediator of skin pigmentation. More recently, it has been shown that alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone also plays pivotal roles in energy homeostasis, sexual function, and inflammation or immunomodulation. Alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone exerts its antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory effects by binding...
متن کاملThyrotropin-releasing hormone selectively stimulates human hair follicle pigmentation.
In amphibians, thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulates skin melanophores by inducing secretion of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone in the pituitary gland. However, it is unknown whether this tripeptide neurohormone exerts any direct effects on pigment cells, namely, on human melanocytes, under physiological conditions. Therefore, we have investigated whether TRH stimulates pigment produc...
